Create an Elegant Finish with Paris Grey & White

Staging items used with end table. Bokeh hearts effect added to photo.

Thrift stores truly are full of treasures, although sometimes you need to dig around to find them. This is a lovely Drexel end table which was hidden beneath a pile of thrift store junk. It was in great condition except for some scratches on the top.

Vintage Drexel end table found hidden under junk at a thrift store.

First I sanded the top smooth with my orbital sander then wiped away the sanding dust with a tack cloth. You don't need to wear a glove when using the tack cloth, but I don't like the way the cloth feels (slightly sticky) so I usually wear a glove.

I sanded the wood top smooth and then wiped it with a tack cloth.

I applied shellac over the bare wood to give it a good base coat prior to applying paint. Primer could be used instead of shellac, but I prefer the shellac because it is clear and it dries quickly.

I used shellac instead of primer to seal the bare wood prior to painting.

I swirled some Paris Grey and Pure White into a container. Instead of fully mixing the paint colors, I applied the swirled paint mixture directly onto the project and blended as I painted. The swirled paint provides subtle dimensions of color. Be sure to use colors that play nicely together otherwise you might end up with a muddy finish.

Gently swirl the paint instead of mixing. This will add dimension to your finished project.

After the paint was dry I sealed it with clear wax. Working in small sections I next applied a Winter White Glaze with a foam brush. I wiped away the excess leaving the remaining glaze to settle into the nooks and crannies.

AFTER:

The final finish is a soft gray with highlights of white.

The colors I chose for the staging items were pink, blue, and gray with neutral accents.
