Secret Christmas Project Reveal: Rustic Farmhouse Coffee Table

If you follow me on Facebook you might remember I was working on a secret Christmas project for a client. Now that the holidays are over I can finally reveal the project. It was a rustic farmhouse table custom built by my husband Jeff and finished by yours truly.  It was fun playing Santa Claus!

We followed the Ana White plans for The Rustic X Coffee Table which you can get for free here. Jeff and I went to Home Depot to pick up the supplies needed.

Each piece was hand selected. Jeff told me to lay the boards on the floor to check how straight they were.

Luckily we had some nice warm weather when we started the project. We used our deck and patio table as a work station.

I've always wanted to learn how to build furniture, and this was a good project to start with. It was interesting to read through the plans and then try to visualize how it would all come together. Although I admit I was a bit lost at times. Luckily Jeff knew what he was doing.

The weather took a turn for the worse, so we had to move the project indoors. Luckily we were able to get all the wood cut beforehand.

I was juggling a couple of projects, so I used my entryway to work on staining the wood.

I stained the entire piece in Antique Walnut and then painted the base in Old White. You might be wondering why I stained the base prior to painting: the client wanted a rustic finish, so I wanted to make sure the distressed paint would show the walnut color and not raw wood. I finished the piece with several applications of High Performance Top Coat.

We had to set up a temporary workshop in our kitchen to assemble the table top. We used a kreg jig to connect the wood planks. I have a couple of other furniture build projects I want to try, but I've decided to wait until the weather warms up.

After

I only had time for a couple of quick photos of the finished piece prior to delivery.

If you happen to notice some blotchiness on the wall behind the table it's because I was testing different shades of white paint color on the wall. Somewhat embarrassing but we're all friends, so it's all good!

I love the deep color of the antique walnut stain against the white finish.

The table is sturdy enough to sit on. The finished project is a bit heavy, so I added felt pads for easy maneuverability on the client's wood floor.

My client said she loves the table, so I was able to breathe a sigh of relief!  Thank you so much for stopping by The Black Sheep Shoppe today! I hope you had a Merry Christmas and I wish you a very happy New Year.

  1. I love it Patricia - has that popular Farmhouse vibe. Love the white distressed based with the dark walnut top. You two make building it look so easy! Pinned to my new Farmhouse board.

    1. I have to give my husband most of the credit. But I'm excited to learn more about building furniture when the weather gets better. The best part of the project is how much my client loves the table! :-)
