Entryway Cabinet: From Dated to Elegant

I found this small entryway cabinet at a local Goodwill store. The small footprint is perfect for a little extra storage in an entryway or hallway

Here's another view that shows the actual shape better.

The finish was a little worn here and there. What I especially love is the tear drop door pull.

I removed the door pull prior to painting and created a temporary pull with painter's tape.

I painted an all over base coat in Paris Grey.

After applying the base coat I held up my color chart for inspiration for my color palette. I like how the blue colors look against the Paris Grey.

I applied Louis Blue to the raised panels and Greek Blue (shown in a later photo) to the recessed areas.

Before we get to the "after" photos, I wanted to share the photo below which demonstrates how the wax slightly deepens the colors.

AFTER:

The final color has muted grey and blue tones.

No one will ever guess that this was a Goodwill store find.

I applied a light wash of Provence over the Louis Blue.

The Greek Blue has a light wash of Paris Grey. The trim has hints of Old Ochre.

I applied some dark wax to further age the painted finish. I finished the piece with splashes of "fly speck" here and there.

The interior shelf was in great shape, so I left it unpainted.

The staging items I used today were also thrift store finds.

  3. I would have had the cabinet refinished to the original stain. Painting such a beautiful piece just isn't for me but as long as you are pleased with the results....
