Blog Post #303: Out with the Old

This antique dresser that I found at a thrift store was a little worse for the wear.

I completed this project a couple of years ago, but I held onto it instead of selling. However, we're in the process of downsizing, so I decided to take to my booth to sell. Here's a quick recap of what I did previously with the dresser . . .

First I sanded the top and then refinished it with gel stain. The top was heavily damaged when I bought it, and it still isn't perfect (although it looks good in this photo), but I didn't want to sand too far and ruin the top.

Next I applied a first coat of Provence Blue followed by a scant second coat. I sanded the paint back somewhat heavily for a rustic finish and then sealed it with clear wax.

Next I applied a generous amount of dark glaze over the painted finish and then wiped it back with a blue shop towel. It's important to seal the paint prior to applying the glaze, otherwise you will have a hot mess. The glaze settled into the recessed areas and slightly darkened the paint color overall.

And here is the finished dresser. It's the perfect size for storage and seating.

This dresser received a rustic painted finish in Provence Blue.

I chose the blue to coordinate with the copper colored drawer pulls.

I love the blue finish against the dark wood. I hate to let this one go. I was using it to store gift wrap and accessories, but as part of the downsizing process I used up my extra gift wrapping supplies and now just buy it as needed.

I love when I find furniture that looks like it is beyond saving. And then *snap* I make it look good!
