This china cabinet was manufactured by The Bassett Furniture Company. My guess is it is circa early 1900's (1920's or early 1930's). The piece overall is sturdy and in good working order. Other than the beautiful veneer on the drawer front, the remaining veneer was in poor condition. Most of the decorative trim had broken pieces. When I purchased the cabinet the glass was cracked, so I had a local glass company install new glass.

The stamp reads, "BASSETT FURN CO 520 CHINA" |
 |
The interior was worn and dated. |
 |
There was damage to the finish throughout the china cabinet. |
 |
The veneer was crumbling off in pieces and required extensive repairs. |
 |
I used a lot of wood filler to fill in many of the broken and missing pieces. |
Here are links to the actual products I used:
The color scheme I chose for the exterior is Napoleonic Blue with accents in Graphite chalk paint. The interior is Cream.
I sanded the entire piece (interior and exterior), sealed with clear wax, then added a lightly distressed finish and an antique glaze along with dark wax. Subtle highlights of gold were added to the decorative trim and hardware. I love how these colors contrast with each other! A word of caution: it's important to seal the paint with clear wax prior to adding dark wax or glaze.
Gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteYou did an excellent job. I am about to redo a side board and this color has inspired me. What kind of glaze did you use before the dark wax?
ReplyDeleteThank you! I sealed the paint with clear wax before applying the glaze and dark wax. I used Rustoleum Java glaze.
DeleteThank you. This piece is gorgeous!
